Wholphin is a Good Watch

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Wholphin is a quarterly DVD magazine from Dave Eggers and the McSweeney’s people featuring all manner of filmed media, animated and live action, lost and found, old and new, all of it well produced yet rarely seen. Issue one had a Spike Jonze documentary of Al Gore which could’ve resulted in a different current president had more people seen it. There was also a film about a frozen wasteland inside Selma Blair’s vagina. Issue two is here bringing: sour death balls, Steve Carell, baby squid, Andy Richter, Martin Starr (of Freaks and Geeks), a crying contest, and Donald Trump on Citizen Cane. A bonus DVD included is the first of a three-part series, “The Power of Nightmares,” a documentary that will never air on American TV. You’re a silly person if you don’t subscribe.

Fresh Basil is Delicious in Lemonade

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

At Boule the other week, I sampled their lemon-basil sorbet - a suprisingly perfect pairing of flavors. Inspired, I tried the same combo at home in lemonade - sucess! - the basil cuts the bitter and makes the drink even more refreshing than conceivibly possible.

Ambient Nirvana Achieved With Buddha Machine

Daniel Handler’s review in The Believer suggested getting more than one, so I got two, and now want nine. See, this Buddha Machine, created by the musical duo FM3, plays nine different ambient audio loops, which blend nicely if you turn on many silmoutaneously. I plugged one into my stereo speakers and left the other on my desk. Now I want more to hide around the apartment. There are other “praying to Buddha” machines but they use traditional chinese recordings instead. Get the FM3 version here.

Reporting From The Heartland: What’s New in Fargo?

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

This week, the world’s largest sporting goods store opened in Fargo, North Dakota, the same week I happened to be visiting. Now, understand, sports are huge up here, huge as spectator sports, that is. Actual athleticism isn’t as popular. It’s “sports as leisure,” if you will. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for Fargo’s mega-sporting goods store to feature a Ferris wheel, candy shop, and shooting arcade. A rock-climbing wall would require effort, possibly sweat, and that’s no fun.

A “living statue” has nothing to do with sports but no one seems to care.

You can practice with toy guns in the shooting gallery.

And for no logical reason, Lincoln, and seven other presidents, line the second floor balcony. That’s my Fargo!

Surprisingly, fashion critics have yet to use the word when describing the Dior show - was anyone paying attention in 6th grade science class?

Okay, so the ones on top are super yummy but the Adidas store lacked a 14. But the bottom ones, yeah - they had those in 14s, and they’re loving my feet right now.
